Clean your Furniture

Particleboard, also referred to as fiberboard, is composed of wood chips or wood shavings resined and compressed together. Although not as strong as solid wood, particleboard is a much cheaper alternative. Carpenters use it to make subfloors as well as cabinets, shelves and dressers. Just like when you clean regular wood, you must avoid soaking or saturating particleboard when cleaning, to prevent water damage. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Combine equal parts vinegar with warm water in a small bucket or spray bottle.
  2. Wipe down the particleboard with a dry cloth to remove dust and debris.
  3. Dip a cloth in the cleaning solution, or spray the cloth using the spray bottle. Squeeze or wring the cloth so it is damp but not overly wet.
  4. Wipe down the particleboard with the dampened cloth to remove any residue or buildup. If the cloth is leaving traces of residue behind, it is too wet and you need to wring it again.
  5. Wipe down the particleboard with a water-dampened cloth to remove vinegar residue. This is not necessary unless you are sensitive to the smell of vinegar or have cats. Dried vinegar may smell like cat urine to your cat, causing him to urinate or mark his territory.
  6. Use a towel to dry any sitting water or obvious dampened spots.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never use any abrasive cleaning products, as they can scratch the surface of particleboard.
  • If the water saturates the wood, it could cause the particle board to split, bow or peel apart.
